The History of the Wagon Train Squares
Wagon Train Squares was formed by Bert and Beulah Freeman with the help of Louie and Ruth Hester. The club became a member of C.C.H.A. in 1968. The first class graduated 34 members on July 4, 1968 - they all became charter members of the club. The first official club dance was held on July 13, 1968. Louie Hester was the caller. Bert Freeman was the first official club caller. He also served as Vice President of the Cow Counties Callers Association. The first Wagon Master was Clarence and Ethel Babcock, with Marvin and Hazel Lowe serving as Scouts. The club danced at the Pedley Town Hall. The first club visitation was to the Caper Cutters in Yucaipa. The club has continued this tradition and enjoys visiting clubs throughout Southern California. Shortly after the formation of Wagon Trains, some parents in the club formed a young people's group called the Peanut Promenaders (which sadly to say, no longer exists). Wagon Train Squares remains one of the few family clubs in the area. An ongoing activity which started in October 1968, is the semi-annual campouts. The first one was called the Wagon Train Squares Roundup. The Cowboy Breakfast (now the Cuck Wagon Breakfast), cooked by the men of the club, is still a popular event of the campouts. Wagon Train Squares used to dance the 2nd and 4th Saturdays at Cowtown in Riverside. Currently the Wagon Train Squares dance on the second Saturday at Cowtown in Riverside.
